David Guerra

U.S. Registered Patent Agent

I was an Engineer and a Patent Agent before I became a Dad. That changed everything.

It wasn’t long into parenthood that my infant son had a serious fever. He was so uncomfortable, the only thing that would soothe him was his pacifier. In those few moments that it took to take his temperature, he struggled and my heart broke hearing him cry.

One night while he was sleeping and knowing that the time to take his temperature was looming, I thought, “I know, I’ll order one!”, a pacifier with a built-in thermometer. How simple! So I went on-line to order one and couldn’t find one that had the accuracy of an under-the-tongue thermometer and the comfort of a pacifier.

The next day at work, I did a patent search and discovered no one had come up with it yet.

How was that possible?

So, I became a patent holder to US 9,625,328 and CA 2,856,193.

My teenage son is now a talented athlete. And so it follows that I have now patented an impact reducing helmet (US 9,408,423 and CA 2,916,539). I am in the process of commercializing it now.

If I can peer into the future, I imagine soon I will be involved in autonomous vehicle technology. The idea of him driving is not one that I am yet comfortable.

As problem solvers, as people who see a better way, it is our responsibility to share solutions as we see them. Not everyone can do what we do.

In my over 20 years as a patent agent I have spoken to many people about what circumstances were that had them develop the technology that they did. It has always come from necessity. If it solves a challenge for you, it will do the same for others. Our lives become richer as we serve our families, our communities, our planet.
